Masala Dal

If you have ever traveled by train in India, the above picture would make you nostalgic :)  One of the primary reasons I like to travel by train in India is all the yummy food available to buy,  each time the train stops at a station.

This is recipe 16 of 30 and one of my favorites too :)

Recipe:

Bengal gram (Chana dal) - 2 cups
Oil - for frying
Black salt - 1 1/2 teaspoon
Regular salt - to taste
Chaat masala - 1/2 teaspoon
Red chilli powder - 1 teaspoon
Fresh lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
Cilantro - 1/2 cup, very finely chopped
Green chillies - 2 finely chopped
Red onion - 1, very finely chopped
Raw mango - 1/2, diced
  • Soak Dal in water, overnight.  Drain.
  • Heat oil.  Fry Dal on high heat.  Be very careful when frying.  Only try with small quantity first.  The oil tends to rise when dal is added.  Be extra careful.  Fry until the Dal is crisp.
  • Add black salt, regular salt, chaat masala, red chilli powder.
  • When serving add cilantro, onion, raw mango, green chillies, and lemon juice.
Enjoy!

  1. I too love this. Crunchy and a good time pass on train journeys. Every other station has something to offer. This is the best thing about traveling by train. Nice picture!!
